Panda Bond Issuance Exceeds 190 Billion Yuan as Offshore RMB Demand Surges

Panda bond issuance in China surpassed 190 billion yuan in 2026 as of July 30, according to data compiled by Enterprise Early Warning, underscoring surging demand from overseas entities for RMB-denominated financing.

Rapid Market Expansion

Panda bonds, which are yuan-denominated bonds issued in China's onshore market by non-Chinese issuers, have seen sustained expansion throughout the year. The 190 billion yuan milestone reflects both favorable yuan funding costs and growing global acceptance of the Chinese currency.

Issuers have included multilateral development banks, foreign governments, international financial institutions, and multinational corporations seeking to diversify funding sources and hedge currency exposure.

Why Panda Bonds Are Booming

Several factors are driving the surge: China's relatively low interest rate environment compared with global benchmarks, enhanced bond market opening measures, streamlined issuance procedures, and increasing use of the yuan in cross-border trade and investment settlement.

The growth also aligns with China's broader push to internationalize the yuan. Shanghai's cross-border yuan business volume reached 20.38 trillion yuan in H1 2026, up 26% year-on-year, according to the PBOC Shanghai headquarters.

Market Outlook

Bankers expect panda bond issuance to maintain strong momentum in the second half, with pipeline demand from both new and repeat issuers. The market's deepening provides international investors additional access to China's capital markets and supports the yuan's role in global finance.
