Financial Statements Are Your Key Tool

Before investing in any company, understand its financial statements. These reveal financial health, operational efficiency and growth potential.

The Balance Sheet

Balance sheet shows what company owns (assets), owes (liabilities) and residual equity at a point in time. Equation: Assets = Liabilities + Equity. Examine current assets vs current liabilities, total debt levels, and asset quality.

The Income Statement

Income statement shows revenues, costs and profits over a period. Key metrics: revenue growth, gross margin and net profit margin. Compare across periods to identify trends.

The Cash Flow Statement

Paper profits do not always translate to cash. Operating cash flow particularly important. Profitable company with weak operating cash flow may have aggressive accounting.

Putting It All Together

No single metric tells the whole story. Use multiple indicators together. Watch for warning signs: declining margins despite rising revenues.
