China's New Growth Drivers Power H1 2026: IC Output +23.1%, NEV Penetration 60%

Semiconductor Output Surges 23.1%

China produced 279.8 billion pieces of integrated circuits in the first half of 2026, a 23.1-percent year-on-year increase, reflecting massive government-backed expansion of domestic chipmaking capacity and the maturation of advanced process nodes at facilities operated by SMIC, Hua Hong Semiconductor, and CXMT. The output surge coincides with a structural shift toward Huawei Ascend and other domestically produced AI accelerators, as US export controls on advanced semiconductors continue to reshape supply chains.

New Energy Vehicles at 60% Market Share

China's new energy vehicle market achieved a landmark 60-percent penetration rate in June 2026, with 744,600 NEV units sold in a single month. Full H1 auto exports totalled $91.8 billion, establishing a new record and extending China's lead as the world's largest vehicle exporter. BYD alone sold 403,472 NEVs in June, underscoring the competitive dominance of domestic brands against international rivals in the world's largest automotive market.

Digital Economy and AI Expansion

China's digital economy continues to expand at double-digit rates, with AI core industry scale now exceeding 1.2 trillion yuan as of end-2025. Over 6,000 AI enterprises operate across the country, and domestically developed open-source AI models have been downloaded more than 10 billion times globally — a remarkable achievement for a technology sector that was barely a fraction of this scale five years ago. The cross-border digital economy is also accelerating: cross-border trips in H1 2026 reached a record 369 million, facilitated by expanded e-passport processing and mobile payment systems.

Summer Grain Harvest Sets New Record

Agriculture also contributed to the new growth narrative. China's summer grain harvest in 2026 topped 150 million tonnes, a new record, providing a solid foundation for food security and rural income stability. The combination of record semiconductor output, dominant NEV market share, a booming digital economy, and historic agricultural production illustrates the breadth of China's structural transformation away from low-cost manufacturing toward higher-value, technology-intensive industries.
