Mass-Market Adoption Accelerates
China's new-energy vehicle market reached a milestone in June 2026, with 744,600 NEVs sold — a year-on-year jump of 23.6% — and a new-energy penetration rate of new car sales approaching 60%, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). It is the first month in which the share of NEVs within total vehicle sales has come within touching distance of the 60% threshold.

Market Dynamics
Price competition has intensified: BYD, SAIC and Li Auto have launched sub-100,000-yuan (~$14,000) models targeting mass-market buyers. At the same time, premium brands such as NIO and Xpeng are expanding overseas. The combination of domestic mass-market adoption and surging exports is making China the undisputed global leader in NEV production and sales.
Outlook
CAAM projects full-year 2026 NEV sales to surpass 16 million units, up from approximately 12.9 million in 2025. Policy support — including extended purchase tax exemptions running through end-2027 — and expanding charging infrastructure will be key to sustaining momentum through the second half.
