China's Largest AI Startup Fundraising
DeepSeek, the Hangzhou-based artificial intelligence laboratory, completed its first-ever external fundraising round in June 2026, raising more than 500 billion yuan ($74 billion) at a valuation exceeding $500 billion — making it China's largest AI startup by both capital raised and implied valuation, according to multiple sources familiar with the deal. The round, reportedly led by China's Big Fund (National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund), sent a clear signal that Beijing intends to back domestic AI champions against the backdrop of ongoing US chip export restrictions.
DeepSeek-V4 and Huawei Chip Adoption
The fundraising followed the April 2026 launch of DeepSeek-V4, which broke new ground by simultaneously supporting Huawei's Ascend 910C chips alongside Nvidia hardware on its official compatibility list. The move accelerated adoption of Huawei's homegrown AI chips among major Chinese tech companies, with ByteDance, Tencent, and Alibaba reportedly purchasing significant volumes of Ascend 910C units. The Ascend chip costs approximately one-quarter of Nvidia's China-specific H20 variant while delivering 2.87 times the per-chip compute performance, according to industry analysts.
AI Ecosystem Numbers
China is now home to more than 6,000 AI enterprises as of end-2025, with the core AI industry scale surpassing 1.2 trillion yuan — a nearly 30-percent year-on-year increase, according to the China AI Industry Development Report 2026. Domestic open-source AI model downloads globally have exceeded 10 billion times, cementing China's role as a leading force in global AI development.
Global Recognition
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang publicly praised DeepSeek at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, calling the company's R1 model 'the key force that activated the global open-source AI transformation.' The Shenzhen Guangming District, meanwhile, recorded a 38-percent jump in new home supply in H1 2026, with analysts linking part of the surge to demand from AI and technology workers relocating to the city's tech corridor.
